Sunday 29th August marks the final day of cricket at Loperwood – but, of course, not the final day of our season – and Steve Brandes’ President’s XI side are looking for sweet revenge following the three run loss last season.
Once again, a cast of the great and good of Calmore’s past will be throwing on their whites once more (if they can find them and they still fit!) as the President’s XI challenge Mark Lavelle’s Lord’s-bound first XI to a 40-over a side game starting at 12noon.
Will Brewster’s superb 99 from 91 balls guided the First XI to 224 all out with three wickets from Clive Surry (3-31) and two each for Paul Cass, Mark Boston and Nigel Hill. A timely unbeaten 60 from the evergreen Tom Pegler and 47 from the 1992 Lord’s hero Surry took them close only for them to fall just three runs shy.
As always, it promises to be a great day out as we say farewell to cricket at Loperwood for 2021 – a season that has seen some incredible highs and still has one crescendo on the grandest stage of them all – but Sunday will be a day for Calmore Sports to celebrate the season and enjoy another spectacular day in the sunshine.
First XI captain Mark Lavelle is looking forward to the clash once again. “We have made a couple of changes from last years tight victory – Brew [Will Brewster] still hasn’t got over holing out on 99 and has stood aside and I’m excited to see Marcus in action again who is a big prospect moving forward after debuting last week.
“The President’s XI has a long list of distinguished players from the past who we must respect. It will be great to see them again and catch up and we have put the majority of the 1st XI out too, so hopefully we can put on a good show.”
But he wanted to offer his thanks ahead of the game too. “We have received exceptional support this summer throughout all of our competitions so it would be great to see them all against and give us a chance to say thank you for the backing we have received and cap another great season – the 40th at Loperwood Park – off in fine style, then it’ll be time to take Calmore Sports to Lord’s!”
Both sides have named their teams for the day … and here they are!!!
