We are looking back at what happened “On This Day” across Calmore Sports history. Using the information uploaded to CricketArchive from the library of old club scorebooks and scoresheets and also within the club’s statistical database, we can look back through the years to see what happened in our history. Today is May 3.
In 2003, we kicked off our SPCL Division One campaign at Bashley (Rydal) with a 52-run defeat. The home side posted 231-7 in their 50 overs with none of their side going to a half-century – although extras did! John Wall with 2-30 with the pick of the bowlers. Paul Cass’ 60 and Clive Surry’s 38 stood out but we were rolled for 179 to kick off what was another difficult season!
Things were better when the SPCL season in 2014 kicked off at Portsmouth in Division Two. Ben Johns with 67 led the way and decent contributions from overseas player Josh Holden (47) and skipper Darren Vann (44) as Calmore ran up 234-7 in their 50 overs. Eight of the Portsmouth XI reached double figures but none more than Harry Collier’s 32 as James Rose (3-30) and Mark Lavelle (2-33) span us to a 72-run success to get the campaign off to the perfect start.
As it was on the previous ‘OTD’, the New Forest League started early and, again, a decidedly low scoring game at Balmer Lawn with Brockenhurst 2s beating the Fourths by 17 runs after being bowled out for just 82 in 1986! Iain Bowring (4-23) and Paul Wilkins (4-37) dismantled the home side but only Gavin Hopgood with 35 stood up to Elford and Reeves, who both took five wickets each to rub us out for only 65.
There was also a handful of games in the Border League on this day. In 2011, the Calmore ‘A’ team beat Trojans by just one run. Ben Perry batted through the 15-overs for 41 as the A team reached 106-2 and squeezed over the line thank to Paul Proudley’s final over as he bowled Jon Broomfield to set out wild scenes of celebration (probably!). Meanwhile, the ‘B’ team thrashed Ampfield by 101 runs. Tuesday night bullies Tom Perry (50) and Luke Gould (40) helped the Bs to 167-3 (Ollie Tull 32*) and then restricted the visitors to just 66-6 – Adam Hargreaves taking 3-18.
